High school played a major role in where I am academically today. I attended North Kingstown High School in Rhode Island for four years. Many of the experiences I had in high school, positive or negative, helped me grow as a person. Not only did I grow in academic ways, but I grew in personal ways too. The requirements, classes, and teachers helped me succeed in high school.
In order to graduate, we need to receive a rating of proficient or proficient with honors on e-portfolio and senior project. For e-portfolio we had to have a collection of fourteen assignments entered into an online portfolio that ranged from freshman year to senior year. They all had to meet a different learning topic. At the end of junior year we needed to present them to a panel of judges. For senior project, we had to write a eight to ten page research paper and then do a project that related to the topic we wrote about. We also had to present this to a panel of judges and have a backboard as a visual for our presentation. My topic was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and for my project I raised over 150 teddy bears for the children and adolescents on the inpatient unit at Butler Hospital. Both of these projects helped me with my writing skills, working on long-term goals, and helped me get involved with the community. I was ecstatic when I found out I earned the rating of proficient with honors for both my e-portfolio and senior project
In high school, I was on the Dance Team and participated in Peer Partners. Dance Team helped me get more involved in the school socially. It got me more excited for school functions and helped me with my school spirit. For the team, we were required to perform at all the football and basketball games during half time, which definitely got me out more and involved in the high school experience. Peer Partners was a program in my school that was meant to help out kids who have Autism. It was a year-round physical education class that the students who had autism were required to take. A group of students that wanted to be involved in this program would sign up for their regular physical education class one semester a year and then would sign up for the Peer Partners class. We would hang out with the kids and help them learn how to play sports and be active.
Many of my teachers helped me a great amount with all the stress of the requirements we had to complete in order to graduate. They made sure they were there to support all of the students and made us feel comfortable to go to them if we had any questions at all. Also, every semester the guidance counselors would assist us in picking our classes and applying to colleges. My high school did a great job in preparing me for college. My success in high school is what helped me get accepted to URI and get me where I am today academically and as a person.
